Iran has a varied climate and many natural resources. Inattention to which would affect not only all industrial, technical, and agricultural developments as well as other fields, but would also destroy the investments, ruin plant coverage and rangelands and cause destructive floods, erosion and soil exhaustion, immigration, destruction of roads and communication lines, occurrence of various droughts and filling of dam reservoirs and finally, cause social abnormality, destruction of life infrastructure, and obliteration of food and life security.
Considering the importance of preservation, revival, and appropriate utilization of natural resources, and in order to train professional manpower in the fields of rangeland, watershed, and desert management, the Engineering Department of Arid and Mountainous Regions Reclamation came into existence in 1966. In recent years, with the increase of human intervention and change in the climatic conditions as well as the need for scientific expansion of this field and application of science towards the social needs and requirements, activities were re-organized in three parts of rangeland management, watershed management, and desert greening.

Watershed engineering is a field, which aims at the comprehensive recognition of watershed areas in terms of potentials and limits, and eventually management of water and soil resources using managerial, biological, technical, engineering methods as well as other related methods centered on watershed inhabitants or humans. This field of study is organized in a way that the postgraduates, once they are graduated, would be able to work in research and administrative centers in areas such as watershed plans, design and execution of mechanical structures, mass wasting control, flood management, urban watershed management, and other programs related to watershed management.
In the rangeland management field, graduates gain the required insight and knowledge fields such as landscape ecology, rangeland ecosystem and relations among its consisting parts (environmental factors and plant coverage), preservation, rangeland utilization and correction, fighting soil erosion, drought, and gaining the ability to utilize rangeland ecosystems in an economic way such as harvesting and processing of economic plants. graduates of this field will be able to work on pasture management plans, design and execution of biological and biomechanical plans for rangeland development and improvement, determining the pasture's potential for multiple-use such as apiary and cultivation of medicinal and industrial plants and other rangeland management programs.
In the field of desert management and control, considering the expanded fragile ecosystems in the wilderness regions of the country and due to the fact that these regions have been exposed to land degradation and desertification for various reasons (human and natural factors), included in the main goals of this specialization is to acquaint students with effective factors in desertification, prospective mentality on the subject, combination of indices and criteria in operationalizing strategies for confronting the phenomenon of desertification, wind erosion, dust, and decreasing the effects caused by the drought phenomenon.
Graduates from this department can work in research centers and in offices of natural resources as well as organizations concerning natural resources including Ministry of Agriculture, Ministry of Energy, the Environment Protection Organization, Ministry of Interior, municipalities, Management and Planning Organization, Ministry of Petroleum, Ministry of Industry, Mine and Trade, and Ministry of Health, Treatment and Medical Education. Also, the consultant engineering companies, construction, agriculture, and bio-environment companies, are some of the other organizations where graduates can work.
